3 Numbers Every Sole Trader Should Know

When you’re busy running your business, it’s easy to judge how things are going by looking at your bank balance.

The trouble is, your bank balance doesn’t tell you the whole story.

You don’t need complicated reports or endless spreadsheets. In fact, there are just three numbers that can tell you whether your business is heading in the right direction.

1. How much have you sold?

This is your monthly sales figure.

Looking at it every month helps you spot patterns. Are sales growing? Have they slowed down? Is one month always quieter than another?

If your sales have dipped for a couple of months, it’s worth asking why. Could you do more marketing? Contact previous customers? Or is it time to review your prices?

Keeping an eye on your sales means you can take action early, rather than waiting until things become a problem.

2. How much have you actually made?

Sales are important, but profit is what pays you.

Profit is what’s left after you’ve paid your business expenses.

You might have had a busy month, but if your costs have increased just as quickly, you may not have earned any more money.

Checking your profit each month helps you answer questions like:

  • Am I charging enough?
  • Have my costs increased?
  • Am I keeping enough of what I earn?

It’s one of the simplest ways to understand whether your business is becoming more profitable.

3. How much cash do I have available?

Cash gives you options.

It allows you to pay your bills, buy stock, replace equipment and pay yourself without worrying.

Even profitable businesses can run into cash flow problems if customers are slow to pay or a large bill arrives unexpectedly.

Ask yourself:

  • Can I comfortably cover next month’s expenses?
  • Am I waiting for customers to pay me?
  • Are there any big costs coming up?

Knowing the answers means fewer surprises and a lot less stress.

Keep it simple

You don’t need a complicated dashboard to understand your business.

Spend just 15 minutes at the end of each month looking at these three numbers:

  • Sales – Is my income growing?
  • Profit – Am I making enough money?
  • Cash – Can I comfortably pay my bills?

If one of those numbers changes, ask yourself why and decide on one thing you can do before next month.

Small changes, made consistently, can make a huge difference over time.
